CONGRATULATIONS you are pregnant! Now what? You want those precious memories of your baby in their first few days so you search for a photographer. My advice is to go for someone who’s style you love, someone you feel you can trust with your baby. Safety is your main priority so be sure to book someone who has had training in newborn safety and how to pose a baby safely.

So you’ve just had your baby (woop woop and congratulations!), you’ve got your photoshoot booked and wondering what is actually going happen during your session!? As a new parent you may be anxious about the upcoming photoshoot and have many questions to ask. Well, hopefully I can answer some of them here but if you do have any other questions then please get in touch and I’d be happy to answer them for you.

1.     What happens if my baby comes early?

If your baby comes earlier or later than expected, this is not a problem as we can rearrange your session to another day, with no extra charge of course.

It’s best to keep me up to date after you have given birth so I can do everything I can to rearrange your session. Easier said than done, I know! Once you’ve had a baby days and nights roll into one big pile of mush. You don’t know whether it’s breakfast time or dinner time, Saturday or Thursday. Yep, I’ve been there so I completely understand it may be difficult to remember to contact your photographer as it’ll be the last thing on your mind. Might be a good idea to set a reminder on your phone. But don’t worry! It’s not the end of the world if you forget to keep me updated. I will always be prepared and will prioritise your session as we don’t want to miss that window.

2.     How do I prepare and what do I need?

If you were going out with your baby for the day, what would you bring? Nappies, wipes, spare clothes etc… your photo session is just a day out so prepare yourself that way.
A spare change of clothes for both mum and dad may come in handy too, just in case you get pooped on Yes, it happens. A list of things you might need are:

  • Nappies & wipes

  • Dummy (if using)

  • Spare change of clothes for everyone

  • Extra formula (if bottle feeding)

  • Bibs and cloths

  • Blanket or comforter

  • Snacks and drinks for siblings

These are just a few essentials to remember.

When I went out with my babies, I literally packed three times the amount I needed, just in case.

3.     How long does the session take?

A newborn session can take anything between 2-4 hours. At my studio here in Orpington, a newborn session is totally baby lead so when baby needs to feed, they feed. If baby needs a cuddle with mummy… well, you get the picture. The last thing we want is a picture of a screaming baby in distress needing a cuddle with mummy or daddy.

If your baby doesn't settle for the entire session, we can reschedule. Sometimes babies have bad days and that’s completely normal. They might have a lot more gas than usual, more hungry than usual or just want to be close to mummy or daddy. This is completely normal for newborns but makes it difficult to get any pictures so if you’re happy to reschedule for another day then we will reschedule and baby will most likely be more settled.

4.     What if my baby cries and is unsettled?

Babies cry, we all know that. My baby did, A LOT!

During your session, we will do everything we can to settle your baby. They might need feeding, burping or rocking or they might need to do a big poop, who knows! Please don’t worry. With a session that is completely baby lead, this is bound to happen. Eventually your baby should settle and we can continue to capture those gorgeous moments. But what happens if your baby doesn’t settle at all during the session? I’ll tell you, this happened to me! I took my new baby to a friend of mine who is also a photographer and my baby did not settle for 6 hours! 6 HOURS!!! She had reflux, was constipated or something, I don’t know but she was just not having it. So after we tried and tried, we gave up. My friend kindly offered to reshoot. So we tried again and BAM she was perfect! Got such gorgeous images of her, it was totally worth the wait!

So what I am getting at is that if your baby does not settle during the session, if we cannot get the images you want because baby is not having a good day, then we will reschedule if you wish. No extra charge. My promise to you is that we’ll get images that you love and that is what we’ll get.

5.     What if my baby poops or pees during the session?

Babies poop. A lot! So please don’t worry if your baby decides it’s time to go, it’s time to go. Even if it is all over the backdrops and wraps, it literally does not matter. The fabrics are washed thoroughly after each session anyway. While some of the photos are done without a nappy, I always expect an explosion and I am always prepared for it! Please don’t worry about something that is just baby nature.

6.     Will the flash hurt my baby’s eyes?

I get asked this question a lot. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. The only way the light will damage your baby’s eyes is if your baby is looking directly into the light at close distance for a long period of time. The way I have my lights set up is from the side and not directly pointing into your baby’s face. Also the light is bounced and diffused so the flash is softer.  So to be clear, unless I have my lights at close range directly in your babies face without the diffuser and while your babies eyes are wide open, your babies eyes are safe.

7.     we have a say in styling?

If you decide that I am the photographer you’d like to book me to photograph your baby, I’d guess my style is the reason you chose me. If you show me images taken by another photographer with a completely different style, I may not be able to recreate that for you as it is not the style I have work towards. I have worked very hard to develop my style and as  much as your input on how to make your session unique to you is so important to me. I urge you to respect that if I did a different style then it will not be a true representation of my work. The colours, outfits and props from my studio are completely your choice. Please take a look at the newborn gallery on my website https://www.emilymillerphotography.co.uk/#/newborn-1/ to examples of my style. I can recreate anything in there for you :-)
