Why you should have a maternity photoshoot

Uncategorized

My clients tell me on numerous occasions that they won’t be having a maternity shoot, instead they’ll wait until baby is born and have a newborn shoot. That’s fine, I understand because I’ve been there.

I didn’t bother with a maternity shoot because I couldn’t afford to have both. I put on a lot of weight during my pregnancy so there was no way I wanted someone coming to me with a camera anyway. Guess what? I regret that with all of my heart. Living in a digital age, of course I had pictures taken of me while pregnant but they were awful, so awful that I don’t ever have them on show. No way will they be posted on social media and not a chance in hell that they’ll be printed. How sad is that?

Honestly, your children don’t care what you looked like and neither will you in 20 years time. Most importantly, you’ve got those memories to look back on.

Being a mum and a professional photographer I know all too well how important it is to capture these moments professionally and beautifully. Having a professional photoshoot, you’ll want to show your gorgeous self off everywhere.

Here are six reasons why you should invest in a maternity shoot.

1.    It’s a great way to bond with your partner and bump.
Pregnancy is such a special time for both expecting parents and any children you may already have. They will feel so special becoming a big brother or sister and will feel very special being part of that photoshoot while hugging and kissing your belly.
Some children may feel a little left out with all the excitement of a new baby arriving, so a photoshoot is a great way to get them involved so they feel they have an important responsibility.
For first time parents it is a fantastic way to bond with each other and really enjoy the beauty of your bump.

2.    You are only pregnant once with each child, once the moment has gone, it’s gone.
There are only a couple of months in your pregnancy where your belly has really developed, the perfect time to capture yourself growing another human being while your belly is a big gorgeous ball of loveliness. This moment passes by so quickly and before you know it your kids will be starting school, getting married, moving out and starting their own family. You’ll be wishing you had just one beautiful photo of when you and your baby were one person.

Your children will want to see memories of you when you were pregnant with them. They’ll want to see what you looked like while nurturing them inside you. I wish my own mother had more pictures of herself when she was pregnant with me. I don’t think she’s got any! Don’t let the opportunity pass.

3.    It’s such a fun and enjoyable experience.
Having a photoshoot may be a bit daunting especially if you’re the camera-shy type. The right photographer will reveal your fun side resulting in creative photo’s full of love and laughter.
I love to talk about how the parents met, I share my own stories, (However crazy they are!) anything to bring back those special memories of falling in love and the fun times you had as a new couple. You’ll have a rush of excitement and appreciation for your partner knowing how much they love you and your new baby as you reminisce about the times you have had together. I just love capturing those natural intimate moments while a couple fall more deeply in love with each other.

4.    You’ll be made to feel exceptionally beautiful.
Although you may not feel like it, you are incredibly beautiful and strong. I felt like an oversized hippo when I was pregnant with my first so I know all too well how it feels. Remember, you are your own worst critic and people see you differently to how you see yourself. You need to remember, you ARE beautiful and there are thousands of people who wish they could look like you.
During a photoshoot, a photographer who knows what they’re doing will have your body posed to make you look incredible and feel sexy again. The lighting will bring out your best features. I have a number of dresses to choose from and these dresses are designed to bring out your bump and make you look and feel awesome!

5.    An opportunity to doll yourself up, wear a pretty dress and feel like the most beautiful woman in the world.
When is the one time you wear a pretty dress, made to feel centre of attention and the prettiest girl in the room? Your wedding day, right? The only time you feel like the most beautiful woman in the world, right? Wrong! Why should it be the only time you feel most beautiful? Because it’s the one day in your life that, more than likely, won’t come around again? Why should your pregnancy be any different? You’re only pregnant once with each child so I truly believe it is something that needs to be documented.

6.     It is worth investing money in.
Depending on which photographer you decide to go with, just remember, you get what you pay for. You book with a budget photographer and you’re more than likely going to receive low resolution bad quality images. Of course, this is not all budget photographers but I am going by experience. I was once your budget photographer just trying to gain experience and build my portfolio.
I’ll be brutally honest with myself, when I started my journey as a photographer, my work was rubbish. Bad quality, bad lighting, I didn’t produce high end results. So, you could say my prices reflected my work. After investing in numerous workshops and training, I now produce high quality work my clients are proud to hang in their home.
Most photographers will have some sort of payment plan to make it easier to purchase your images. More importantly, when you book a photographer make sure you love their work. The amount you pay will be worth it when you know what you’re going to get.

The most important reason to have your bump documented is so you can have those memories to look back on and remember what it was like when you had your child growing inside you. Better yet, when your gone your grandchildren and great grandchildren will have those amazing memories of you. That is your legacy, your stamp in your family timeline. Something your family can hold on to for years and years to come.
